The ecology of hipsters

The Dependent magazine wins the internet by estimating the population density of hipsters in Vancouver, using capture-recapture methods.

If they continue sampling and build up a time series, Ted Hart at UBC can show them how to estimate past hipster abundances.

  1. If it weren´t a flawed methodology (you can´t really sample the important rates with only 2 data points), the implications of what you´ve highlighted could be incredible.

Imagine, comparing fertility and mortality rates across historical genres, from hipsters, via grunge kids, to mods, rockers and zoot suit wearing jazz cats.

    Astonishing!
