Charles Darwin is going to be in an animated pirate movie

The movie version of The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! comes out later this month. I can’t wait!

  1. Another classic featuring Charles Darwin:

    • I think I may have actually mentioned this clip in my old post on ecological and evolutionary movies, but good to give newer readers a chance to see it. ;-)

  2. So….a guy named Defoe has written a series of books about pirates’ encounters with various groups of people. I find that interesting.

Along the way I learned that the true title of the other Defoe’s book is actually titled:
“The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un‐inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver’d by Pirates.”

I’ve never seen a title that needs its own abstract before.

  3. No scientists in the title in the US. It will be The Pirates: Band of Misfits instead.

    WTF America.

    • Yes, that’s why I linked to the UK trailer.

  4. It’s out in Norway, saw it (w/ my kids) last week (Spoiler Alert)! It’s one of the few movies I’ve seen where the movie is incredibly much better than the trailer! Full of wonderful little details!

It’s certainly doesn’t present Darwin as a flawless hero, he (at least initially) comes through as quite a chicken, plotting to (litterally) increase his chances w/ queen Victoria. But when he realizes he himself has been set up, he stays to help clean up the mess. His servant is nothing less than hilarious!

I suppose it can be argued that Darwin wasn’t a particularly brave man (face to face), and that he knew how to network. As a fan of Darwin AND of Aardman, I feared I would be left torn. But the fun they poked at Darwin can certainly be endured. If Darwinism isn’t a religion, there can’t be blasphemy either ;-)
